Blue Mountain Metalworks is a member of ABANA (Artistic Black Smith Association of North America), and NOMMA (the National Ornamental and Miscellaneous Metals Association).
Company owner Dirk Brown has lived in the High Country of western North Carolina since 1986. He received a Bachelor’s degree in Art, Marketing & Production from Appalachian State University in 1993. He initially pursued his interests in sculpture and metal work through employment with Charleston Forge where he was involved in all aspects of wrought iron furniture production and design. In 2001, Dirk joined Powell’s of Banner Elk where he worked with and learned from Ed Powell, a nationally known leader in the ornamental metal. In March, 2005, a driveway gate designed by Dirk won the Gold Medal for Outstanding Craftsmanship in an international competition sponsored by the National Ornamnental and Miscellaneous Metal Association (NOMMA).
In March, 2006, Dirk purchased Powell’s of Banner Elk, incorporated the business, and began operating as “Blue Mountain Metalworks”. Dirk’s background in creative arts in combination with years of experience and strong forging and fabrication skills make him uniquely qualified to create high quality, functional metal work for residential and business settings.
Our work is located in a variety of public and private venues. We are especially proud of the artistic fencing installed on the lawn of the historic Jones House Community Center in the heart of downtown Boone. This project was the result of Blue Mountain Metalworks being awarded a competitive grant to create a unique fence that would protect the roots of the giant maples located on the Jones House lawn and would also be a work of public art. Funding for the project was provided by the North Carolina Arts Council, the Town of Boone, and the Boone Area Chamber of Commerce.
Railings, gates, fire screens and other fixtures created by Blue Mountain Metalworks can be found in Grandfather Mountain Golf and Country Club, Hound Ears, Linville Ridge, Diamond Creek, Elk River, and Eagle’s Nest, to name just a few of the High Country settings in which our work appears. We typically work in Ashe, Watauga and Avery Counties, but we have also created metal work for locations throughout North Carolina and have shipped custom metal work across the country. Our work has been featured in High Country Magazine and High Country Home.
Blue Mountain Metalworks is committed to creating products that are both visually pleasing and highly functional. We are equally comfortable working in traditional and contemporary styles to create unique, beautiful items that complement and distinguish any setting.
